Critical investigation proposal

Working title
To what extent do the representations of black people in 'Straight Outta Compton' reinforce negative stereotypes?

Angle
This is a moral panic as the Media views on straight out of Compton is that they are perceiving the life of a bunch of thugs or gang bangers. Its a rag to riches.

Hypothesis:
Straight out of Compton is represented in a bad light

Media Representations

  • Black ethnicity is represented is a negative way
  • Critics say that they missed out on Dr Dre issues in the 90's of beating up women.
  • Also as whole the movie is very degrading for women as they are treated as "sex objects"

Media Languages and Forms

  • Film dark scenes to show the dangerous street of Compton
  • real transition to when they get money and successful much more light at pool parties and hotels
Narrative

  • Narrative structure equilibrium-disequilibrium-new equilibrium rags to riches
  • narratives roles protagonist,hero (nwa members),villain (jerry)
Genre

  • Urban drama
  • Based on a true story

Media Values and Ideology

  • This film  has positive value to educate and inform how the police used to treat black civilians

Media Audiences

  • 15+
Social
  • Social representation of black people in america are they are drug dealers or unsuccessful or gang bangers
  • Rappers are violent and music is not art
  • They represent gang culture and reinforce these things in their music
Historical
  • Slavery in America began when the first African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, to aid in the production of such lucrative crops as tobacco.
  • This then lead to black people being separated from the rest into bad neighbourhoods like Compton;
  • Through 1900's they were fighting their rights and police brutality
Economic
  • The film broke r rated movies records it is the highest selling music film
  • African American in the film are seen to be poor and deal with drugs to survive
  • in the film you see how they react towards contracts and money
Political
  • In the film they are against the government as they feel like they don't help them out especially police
  • Police brutality was huge in the 1980's and so on
  • This lead to the riots in 1992 due to the killing of a innocent man Rodney king by police kicking and hitting them
Issues and Debates
  • Representation and stereotyping is related to my study as the whole film is about the story of NWA and their life and in the film you can see how they were stereotyped and given bad representation. The film showed the police given rough and random searches on African american civilian in compton because they stereotype and thought they were drug dealers.then when the film came out the media straight away assumed that film would influence people to riot and the film have a negative effect on them and make them react angrily.
  • Media effects is also related to my study as iam analysing why the media mostly underrated and stereotype straight out of Compton. So this would also make the audience stereotype it and not go see as they know the bad things about the film because of the film
  • News Values this theory is analszing the news and so this relates to my study as CNN had segment saying there was no violence at the straight out of Compton.Compton. This shows that the news value number one thing is bad news and or something unusual and so it there being no violence at the shows being showed and there was just long lines.
    Negativity
Bad news - involving death, tragedy, bankruptcy, violence, damage, natural disasters, political upheaval or simply extreme weather conditions - is always rated above 'positive' stories (royal weddings, celebrations etc)

  • Moral Panics the process of arousing social concern over an issue - usually the work of moral entrepreneurs and the mass media.this is the definition and so this links to my study as the media(news) are trying to make this a social concern. As the police has told some people not to watch the film as it will gives a bad representation of the police but not of the rappers.

  • American dream is the ideal by which equality of opportunity is available to any American, allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved. This relates to the story of the movie which is their rise to fame and its rags to riches story.
Theories
  • Audience theories
This links to my study as I want to find out whether the representation of black people in the movie has made the audience feel.the black feel angry or do the white people have sympathy. Why does the audience consume the text? such as uses and gratification or effects model of moral panic they are intrigues to see what happens.
  • Gender and ethnicity theories
This theory links to my study as the question is does the movie reinforce black negative stereotypes. So does the ethnicity of the characters live up to society representation of them being uneducated drug dealer, gang bangers, guns and drug uses and treat women badly. The male gaze was strong in the movie too as they always ha beautiful women around them in nearly all of the scenes and so it may suggest that they were just objects they were just there to look.
  • Marxism and hegemony
Over powering black people in the film was the aim as the police and white people had more authority on them as they were poor and hardly of them enjoyed school and dropped instead of ice cube.Even in hat scene you can see ice cube looking at the white students that were separated from the black students.
  • Genre theory
Urban drama movie so the genre helps out the audience has it have any correlation. The genre draws a different audience to a normal drama as its urban its more up to date with the new days.Even though its trying to represent the 1980 however they switch it up for us to understand more clearly.this audience pleasure as some of their favourite rappers were in their such as eazy e or ice cub e or snoop dogg and even tupac.

This presentation reflects the same as my critical investigation will be as i will be assessing straight out of Compton and how media outlets in the UK and US represented it.In a good way or bad way.The point was to see why and how can they as the movie had no problems at theatres and the film broke box office records. The film should of been celebrated not looked at why any bad things did not happened. They need to stereotyping other way the stereotyping is going to get carried on for many more years. The same way black people in america stereotype the police officers to be racist  and very violent towards them.

Summer Project Research

The video was posted up on the very popular site for new music, funny vines compilation and what going on in the world.some say its the ghetto version of YouTube as its audiences are very much black teenagers or in their 20's or older. The video title was CNN Surprised "Straight Outta Compton" Didn't Cause Violence, Earned Record Money Instead! the video was to shame cnn and hear peoples views in the comments. The video saw the host present the segment as a surprise as its a black movie covered guns and violence and is surprised that did not leas to any violence outside the theater. Story was there to represent unusual story headline a black film covered in guns and violence didn't lead to chaos. That what the news is there for to present story's to the audience that they might feel shocked about or feel good about or even bad.So what is so shocking about 20,000 theater screening the same film and there being no violence.

http://countercurrentnews.com/2015/08/cnn-expresses-shock-that-straight-outta-compton/#

I read article stating that the film earned 56 million on the opening weekend a record for rated R movie. Also police were patrolling every single one of the theaters around the US so there couldn't be any trouble. But universal released a statement saying that they told any police to have high security at any of the theaters. CNN are trying to say that the film had no violence but long lines and if there weren't no security there would be trouble. The host also said that police chiefs order police officers and even other civilians not to watch the film as it brings negativity back into the communities and that the film might bring back the whole Fuck the police phrase.

Then i found out that it was just precaution as there were theatre shooting in Louisiana and Colorado as the double digit of people died as there were shootings at the screening of Train Wreck and Dark Knight Rises in 2012.So they did not want a repeat of those times.
Location of the shootings

The comment section of this video was reasonable most said the same thing as why would they cause trouble over a hip hop movie who show what happened a long time ago and some of the viewers weren't even alive. So cnn should be more mature and reasonable. One comment stood and got the most likes as the user said that CNN are surprised why the viewers never caused trouble because the two other screening were done by white kids and than this one would be worse but it wasn't. Another one was they were expecting violence because majority of the viewers are black and a bunch of black people watching white cops abuse black people for no reason would make us violent but we embraced. So was it really worth breaking news like that on a national news segment or is that the world we living in where we are surprised not see violence.

Security concerns[edit]

Straight Outta Compton premiered on August 10, 2015 at the entertainment complex LA Live in Los Angeles, California. An earlier report by L.A. Weekly noted that the LAPD was "beefing up its presence" for the event and The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that organizers had "tripled security" for the red-carpet premiere. Due to concerns surrounding the violent content depicted in the film, it was reported that movie theaters were hiring extra security during the film's opening weekend and Universal Studios would be "reimbursing" theaters for the cost of adding that security. Universal would later state that the studio was not reimbursing theaters for extra security, but would be "partnering" with theaters seeking "support" during screenings of the film. No major incidents were reported at showings of the film during its opening weekend. Some critics say it was because of the extra security at some theaters, others argued that it shows the extra security was unnecessary.

We’re now watching a movie about their lives and so it’s obvious that they found success.  They formed the group N.W.A. (with stands for Niggaz Wit Attitudes), helped create a record label, and released their first album in 1988.  The lyrics were considered too violent and profane and so they received no radio or television coverage.  Even MTV refused to play their music videos.  The controversy only helped boost their notoriety.  They became an underground sensation through word-of-mouth and it wasn’t long before they’d sold 3 million copies of their debut album.
Media Representations

  • This media text is very stereotypical and they used a whole segment on a popular news channel to represent the straight out of Compton viewers are mostly black and fans of hip hip hop are strong believers of police brutality is not allowed in the us.So they believe the film will influence them to start attacks and riots some way it happened in 1992 in the la riots. They represent them in a really mad way and the viewers of the news channel might think the same way.

Media Languages and Forms

  • Image result for nwa fuk the police

    • The media text is the host and guest discuss the factors that help there be no violence at the theatres in the US.the studio they were in was very formal they were talking very formal the studio lighting was clear and so was the conversation.the host ashliegh banfeild seemed very surprised and she didn't have many content on the issue so she invited the chief of police in Atlanta and gave her the background on the film a and the music group. There famous song Fuk the police.

    Narrative

    • The story is based on the question why there was no violence at the cinema and then the turned to the factors such as the police being there and the police telling most people not to go watch to keep the cities safe.So the heroes is the police and villains seems to be the viewers of the film who everyone was gone do something bad.the whole purpose of the news segment should be the narrative of the film, firstly , as the film is representing the life's of the god fathers of rap. They made the first real gangster rap song ,the first real gangster rap that went platinum is a matter of weeks and toured the US over that album.Instead the story of the news is that there was no violence at the film being shown in the theatres.
    Genre

    • The genre is news and its representing urban movies and stereotyping. They are a typical news station showing pictures having a host and a guest.the film is r rated movie and is the highest selling and most watched in the first week. The host is good for her job but i believe the producers have gave her the segment and are talking to her through her ear piece and she is reading her notes that were giving to her. My critical is based on the fact that urban black movies are underrated and stereotyped.
    Media Institutions

  • CNN is huge news station and receive millions of viewers the segment is done by the producer and given to the host to present and talk about with the guest also the station is a public service and is viewed even in England easily and its a live TV network. Also over the past years there have been stereotype and rumours about CNN being very biased to their country and they always give the hard topics and give the benefit of the doubt to the Americans. So when 9/11 happened and when the murders of innocent African american.

    Media Values and Ideology

      Image result for cnn
    • The hypodermic needle was put into a lot of viewers as the host telling the story is someone who has high authority and a very famous presenter. The media values shown are society views on blacks being violent towards the police due to its stories in the passed on police abusing and killing innocent black people.
    Media Audiences

    • The audience of the news segment were majority of middle class and high class whit people AB and the story is reflecting on C1C2DEF. Also the colour comes into as rap and hip hop was originally made in Brooklyn and by back males who used to be in gangs and so the fans and people who want to know or watch the nwa story are mostly black.

Why are black urban movies underrated and stereotype?

CNN ran a segment on Monday reporting that there wasn't violence at movie theatres during the opening weekend of the hip-hop oriented film Straight Outta Compton.

CNN host Ashleigh Banfield reported, “Some movie theatres were worried about violence when Straight Outta Compton hit the screen. Instead, it only led to longer lines, ticket lines and some big money, too.”

Introduce the presentation and ask the question of do cnn love to stereotype and if they do, what do they get out of it. Introduce the storyline and settings of the news reported names.
Long lines-tickets lines but no criminal activities. Instead of congratulating the show and how well its has done in the opening weekend it tries to focus on why the negatives never happened.
She sounds disappointed and so introduces the special guest(a law enforcement officer) who she asks why there weren't no altercation.makes the excuse that there were high security levels at all the theatres.
She then goes on to the fact that police organisation have told members of the police force and even beyond members not to go see the film because of the message it sends out.Of the whole fuk the police campaign and how the film represents police brutality in the late 80's and early 90's
This then resulting in the LA riots which is included in the film.
the phrase fuck the police is a disgrace to the guest who says the police risks their lives for the civilians and so the civilians to throw it back in there face by saying this is sad
The film is not about the history of police brutality but its on the history of nwa and thats what everyone should be celebrating and embracing. Not the fact that there was no violence at the screening that should be added bonus no the main topic
The films is just from their perspective of how they were being treated growing up in compton and how the police stereotype them into being drug dealers or gang bangers and so there proceed into the violentlu searching them
Why are cnn stereotyping because the film is just a art of the nwa members reality so they believe the views after watching the film will be angry of how the police were so violent to innocent people
Then this leading to the la riots because of the police killing a black male called Rodney king and so the police were said to be innocent
This was on from April the 29th till may the 4th in 1992. African american showed there anger by break into stores and stealing there items and putting buildings on fire then waiting for the police to come then throw rocks or even bottles.
The audience who are watching cnn who are middle class white people may believes because of the film and all the police brutality happening right now in america they are afraid that the riots may reoccur and so that's why they headline news that they weren't no violence at all the 20,000 theaters in the US
So they stereotype into thinking mostly black people would watch this film and being influenced by what they see and so they think they might turn on the police of today
why is it so hard to just celebrate what the film has done not only break box office records but educated the young people on police brutality and the god fathers of real gangster rap them selling over 5 millions albums.
also celebrate the life eazy e who was a great rapper and a great entrepeaner who left behind his kids and his wife and great legacy and opened a door for the best rappers right now like kendrick lamar and drake and j cole
the news was seen to be received very poorly that even a new york radio station the breakfast club host charlamagne tha god gave donkey of the day to the cnn news reporter Ashliegh Banfield
He said that the host and producers were surprised that they weren't no stabbings and shootings even though the film was black and what are black people known for
he also went onto say that a few months back there was a shooting a cinema in Colorado and Louisianan and another shooting at another cinema for the dark knight and the other one is trainwreck the movie people died and those films were comedy and superhero so why didn't cnn surprised that the fantastic 4 wasn't shot up or mission impossible
cnn should headline that a black women is pulled over and not dragged out the car and killed or be harmed in any way that should be headline because that were is really happening in american communities
so cnn should stop expecting the worst from black and they will stop stop expecting the worse from there officers
